The idea of a pool management tool for the Soccer World Championship started in 2006. But who wants to ask all the participants for their picks and manage them in Excel again? There had to be an easier way, so of course we needed an website!
2006 – The personal picks
But there were colleagues and friends that wanted to use it at their own work place or with other friends. So we needed to turned into something more client friendly. The result was a tool that can be used by anyone for free. Originally only configured for about 200 users it turned into the rage within a week during the Soccer World Championship 2006 with more than 2500 participants, each with their own personal pools and picks – all of this without ANY advertising!2008 – Pool management
We were planning to continue with this success during the European Championship 2008. However, several months before the UEFA EURO 2008(TM) we already had more than 5'000 registered users. The member count exploded! The users didn’t want to participate in a product sponsored pool and fight thousands of other users to win a prize. They wanted their own private parties for the EURO2008. But for us it exceeded the idea of a «just for fun» project.
Cablecom GmbH in Switzerland supported the project and included it in their European Championship 2008 communication strategies. The portal added additional content and it was a raving success. Tens of thousands of participants. Hundreds of thousands of picks were made. Millions of pageviews were generated. Tipponline.ch′s restrictive and well know data protection laws were fully supported by Cablecom. Everybody profited from this success.
2009 – The pool and game management
During the years we got feedback and improvement suggestions. Most of it we implemented right away. We haven’t been able to implement a few important, major suggestions until now. It finally happened! Now you can pick pools in any competition, not just major events!

Technological information
The website was realized on Windows 2003, IIS6.0, MS-SQL Server 2005 ASP.VB and Webservice VB.NET.
Except for the third party content it is fully W3C conform.
